Objectives
Background
Talents are the key to the success of innovation and technology (I&T) development. Although the HKSAR Government invests heavily in I&T especially in STEM education, the digital gap problem prevails in local schools. Many students find it difficult to put the engineering and technology (E&T) knowledge which they have learned in classes into practice, especially for schools that are not specialized in E&T. This is in fact the global issue of Digital Literacy, which is critical to world digital transformation.
Headed by Centre of Innovation and Technology of CUHK, CRETE (Centre for Realization of Engineering and Technology Education) is setup to implement the objectives below.
Objectives
In order to the upgrading and development of our local schools as well as the fostering of an I&T culture in Hong Kong to aim for youth upskilling to improve the I&T shortage situation, students will be assessed in terms of three different skill levels, collectively referred to as KPI: Knowledge (K), Practice (P), and Innovation (I). Based on the students’ KPI assessment results, school teachers can appropriately design extracurricular activities (ie practical works) for their students; by the same token, school management can better plan their E&T resources for effective Applied Learning, eg adopting activities that match the schools’ education directions.
Aspects of the Pilot Scheme
Series of Theme-Based Extracurricular E&T Activities
The Scheme will set up “Foundations for Education of Engineering and Technology (FEET)” to provide a series of theme-based extracurricular E&T activities to local schools, which take the forms of training, projects, site visits, study tour... etc. To prepare students to embrace GBA opportunities, the Scheme will also broaden the scope of FEET activities to the Greater Bay Area.
Besides activities, FEET will serve as a testbed for the scheme to monitor the progress of E&T education in local schools and to evaluate the effectiveness of ASSETE in narrowing the digital gap in Hong Kong.
Senior and Experienced Trainers
ASSETE will be conducted by pre-trained frontline teachers. A pool of trainers who are experienced in E&T education will train the frontline teachers and assist teachers to design suitable extracurricular activities, which align with their school culture.
One Specific Centre to oversee the ASSETE
Centre of Innovation and Technology of CUHK established “Centre for Realization of Engineering and Technology Education (CRETE)” to oversee the overall implementation and operation of ASSETE and the above aspects.
